Canada’s NOC and TEER System
Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) system is the framework used to classify every job in the Canadian economy. For immigration purposes, selecting the correct NOC for your work experience is one of the most critical steps in your application. The current system uses Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) categories to classify jobs.

The TEER system categorizes occupations from 0 to 5 based on the level of training and education required:
- TEER 0: Management occupations.
- TEER 1: Occupations usually requiring a university degree.
- TEER 2: Occupations usually requiring a college diploma, apprenticeship training of 2+ years, or supervisory roles.
- TEER 3: Occupations usually requiring a college diploma, apprenticeship of less than 2 years, or more than 6 months of on-the-job training.
- TEER 4 & 5: Occupations usually requiring a high school diploma or no formal education.
Most economic immigration programs require experience in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3. Choosing the wrong NOC or failing to demonstrate that your duties match the official description can lead to your application being rejected.
This is where the expertise of a seasoned immigration consultant in Canada becomes invaluable. The team at Phantom Immigration, led by RCIC Manpreet Dhaliwal, provides expert analysis to ensure you select the NOC that accurately reflects your work experience. We help you align your reference letters with the lead statement and main duties listed in the official NOC description, building a strong and credible application.
